Seniors Max W. and Zachary K. Win First Place with "Missing Sock" App in San Diego Hackathon

Last weekend, seniors in Mr. Barker's Honors Algorithms & Data Structures computer science class, Max W. and Zachary K., competed in Hack the Wave, San Diego's largest high school hackathon for students in grades 9-12.
Students do not know their task until they arrive at the competition and then they spend all day -- 12 hours -- completing it.

Zach and Max won first place of 19 teams for their program Sock Finder!Congratulations, Max and Zachary! Zachary wrote a short description of the event:

It being my first hackathon I really did not know what to expect, but I had such an incredible time using the skills that I learned in Buckley computer science classes and applying them to a real project. Having to build something in a condensed period of time was exhausting but super rewarding in the end.

The goal of the hackathon was to create something completely useless, and after almost an hour of ideas, we settled on a sock finder that finds a matching sock to an uploaded image.

After the 12 hours were up, each group presented their projects and there was both a popular vote and a judge vote. Our project won the first place prize!

Max and I plan on competing in more hackathons together and we also want to bring one to Buckley in the spring!
