Former NASA astronaut, Columbia professor of mechanical engineering, and the senior advisor for space programs at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum Mike Massimino visited an Astronomy Club meeting via Zoom last week during lunch, on April 26.

Griffitrons Compete in Regionals

With eight weekends spent on campus, 150 hours spent after school, and three competitions attended, the Buckley 1661 Griffitrons traveled to Port Hueneme, Orange County, and El Segundo to compete in the FIRST regional competitions.

Robotics Team Shines at Third Regional Competition of the Season and Junior Wins Dean’s Award at First Competition!

This year’s robotics team, led by captains Sienna S., Paul H., and Addison F., and club advisors Paul Barker and Nick Carrillo, spent hours after school and on weekends preparing for each competition. For the 2023 season, the team competed in three regional competitions: Port Hueneme, Orange County, and El Segundo.

Sophomore Scores in Top 3% of Math Competition and Invited to the United States of America Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO)

In November 2022, sophomore Lauren P. completed the American Mathematics Competition (AMC) 12, scoring in the top 2.5% of the nation and moving on to the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME) competition, described by the Mathematical Association of America as a “15 question, 3-hour examination in which each answer is an integer number from 0 to 999.”

Instead of a Final: Generational Indigenous Planting

Instead of taking a final, the Upper School Tipping Points class stepped outside of the classroom to plant a generational indigenous garden – different from a simply native garden in that it mimics the planting practices of indigenous people, approaching the earth with care and respect.

On January 6, senior Vale R. was announced as a Regeneron Scholars for his project titled “Enhancing Performance and Sustainability of Firefighting Aircraft in the Era of Wildfires Fueled by Global Warming” that focuses on improving firefighting aircraft using a low-cost, retrofitted aerodynamic device.
