The desire to engage with sensory play comes naturally for children and should be encouraged and supported both at home and in early learning environments. Each week, Mr. Ayers will begin the class by engaging participants in a work of children’s literature. When the story is over, the fun is just beginning! Students will be provided a different sensory experience each week that ties into the book. Participants should bring a big t-shirt from home to cover their uniform, because things may get MESSY, which is probably the most fun of all. The interactive and dramatic nature of this work tends to captivate students and make reading a more enjoyable experience. Studies show that participating in this kind performance also boosts students’ confidence in public speaking and presentation skills. Win! Win! Win! Rehearsal and performances will all happen during Beyond the Bell program time and students may share their work with each other or Buckley faculty and staff to keep the focus on the process of reading and not the product of performance.
