Math Mentors: True Friends Make Math Fun!

Every Tuesday before school, a group of Upper School students rotate to lead sessions teaching math to third grade students through fun games and activities. Senior Emerson S. leads the Math Mentors Program with support from her former third grade teacher, Darlene Urwin, and current math teacher, Tami Woldman.

“(I started this club because) math is an underpopulated field. Personally, I hope to inspire more girls by empowering them to know that anyone can go into math,” says Emerson.

With this in mind, Emerson then reached out to her former third grade teacher, Darlene Urwin, to set up the program for third grade students. Urwin jumped on board with excitement and sent emails to families.

“(This program) gives the younger students confidence, lets them know they have friends on campus, and that math is fun. It’s also nice for the high school students to step into that leadership role. They’re so kind and thoughtful as they participate in activities,” says Urwin.

With an overwhelming amount of interest from students and parents/guardians, third grade teacher Darlene Urwin suggested splitting the mentorship into four week sessions so that students who haven’t gotten the opportunity to sign up due to capacity can do so in the future.

“This is a great opportunity to bridge opportunities between Lower School and Upper School,” says Woldman. “Lower School students can have a glimpse of what high school is like, make connections in the community, and have fun with math. For the high schoolers, I watch their faces light up as they work with the kids. They’re just having fun sharing their love for math,” said Woldman.
