After months of searching and interviews, Buckley’s DEI search committee made a decision for the Director of DEI.
Joining us on July 1 will be Matt Balano, the founding director of DEI at two different independent schools – St. Ignatius in San Francisco and Thacher in Ojai Valley.
In his years as a DEI Director, Balano created networks at his previous schools that oversaw growth in students of color and founded the Latinx Youth Summit which draws 400-500 Latinx youth from high schools around the country.
Prior to his role as director of DEI, Balano worked as a teacher, offering courses in multicultural studies and English as a Foreign Language in South Korea and Spain; in English, ethnic studies, and test prep to first-generation college-bound Middle School students in San Francisco; and in English to grades 10, 11, and 12 at both St. Ignatius and Thacher.
We look forward to welcoming Matt Balano this summer, and are grateful for the efforts of Chuck Neddermeyer and Sabine Abadou for the work they’ve done in the office of DEI as interim director and assistant director.
Upper School students of Spanish 3 Honors, Spanish 4 Honors, and AP Spanish attended the dress rehearsal of the opera, El último sueño de Frida y Diego, and stopped for lunch at the Pueblo de Los Angeles on Olvera Street.
