JPL chief engineer Beth Fabinsky visited Buckley last week to chat with student mathematicians and scientists.
She spoke to a co-ed group about running the Curiosity, WISE, 2020, and NEO-WISE missions at JPL, and her indirect path to becoming a mechanical engineer, which included majoring in Russian and theatre before going into advertising right out of college.
Fabinsky then spoke to just the female students, about being a woman in a male-dominated field. “Have a sense of humor about it,” she said, offering advice to start by pushing back in conversation, both at work and socially. “Someone will ask my husband standing next to me at a party what he does at JPL and even though I work there too, they won’t ask me. I’ll say, ‘Don’t you want to know what I do?’”
Upper School students of Spanish 3 Honors, Spanish 4 Honors, and AP Spanish attended the dress rehearsal of the opera, El último sueño de Frida y Diego, and stopped for lunch at the Pueblo de Los Angeles on Olvera Street.
