Latino Heritage Month

Last Friday, the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion sponsored and organized an assembly for the Lower School featuring a special performance by Pacifico Dance Company in celebration of Latino Heritage Month.
Fifth grade student Jacob N. and second grade student Eli V. welcomed the assembly, and parent volunteers Paula N. and Karen O. decorated a table with art, flags, momentos, and books from our Lower School Latino families.

Pacifico Dance Company, California’s premiere folklórico troupe, strives to share Latino culture, music, and history through traditional dress and dance styles. At the assembly, they performed “Danza de Los Viejitos,” which originated in the state of Michoacan. During the second set of dances, which were inspired by animals, students identified the movements of the bull and the iguana. Next, students came up to the stage and tried rhythmic footwork, a very important part of Mexican dance, before watching “Fiesta en Veracruz,” a dance which incorporates complex footwork. The program concluded with the national dance of Mexico, “The Mexican Hat Dance,” and Jalisco, a dance known for twirling skirts and mariachi music. After the special performance, students were able to delight in treats from Latin American countries.

Happy Latino Heritage Month!
