News at Buckley

Welcome, Haileybury!

Our friends from down under – the Haileybury School in Australia – visited Buckley Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of last week as part of an arts exchange program that the two schools have established.

For the second time in two years, Buckley has hosted roughly two dozen high school-aged students from Haileybury and their chaperones. Originally a collaboration begun by current Buckley teacher and former Haileybury teacher Michelle Amos, the program has allowed students from Australia to travel to Los Angeles to learn from Buckley’s own music and performing arts teachers.

Upon arriving at Buckley Wednesday evening, Haileybury students were welcomed in the library and met their host families. When Haileybury students visited in 2016 they were only paired with Upper School host families, but this year the decision was made to involved all families, K-12.

“Several Lower and Middle School families have participated – I think it’s wonderful that the students from Haileybury really get to experience Buckley across all the divisions,” said Head of Upper School Deborah Monroe, who helped to coordinate the trip.

On Thursday and Friday, Haileybury students accompanied their Buckley host student to classes and took special workshops in music and performing arts.

Thursday’s Improv workshop was facilitated by drama teacher Neil Nash, and featured Brandon Gardner and Gavin Speiller from Upright Citizens Brigade, while Mr. Marino brought in professional musicians Bob Marino (drums), Eric Sittner (bass), and Wayne Jones (piano) to Friday’s band workshop.

“The students had a really great time,” said Amos. “They were especially grateful that the workshops weren’t the same as the last time they were here – Buckley teachers really made an effort to show them something new and interesting.”

On Saturday the students had a free day with their host families, and on Sunday they all visited Universal Studios!
