Middle School Dives Into Science Olympiad

Last weekend a group of Middle School students, led by sixth grade science teacher Joanne Firestone, participated in their first Science Olympiad competition!
Buckley entered the competition at the Southern California Regionals level, placing in the top half overall of the 40 middle school represented - without even competing in three of 23 events! Even with no prior experience, Buckley students dove right into the thick of the competition, going home with several top-20 placements and even a 4th place medal.

"It was very challenging against many experienced teams, but we learned a lot and the kids are excited and talking about how we’re going to crush it next year!" said Firestone.

Several of the commendable placements include sixth graders Jack C. and Ilaria V.-G. who placed 14th in the Hovercraft competition; sixth grader Jordyn B., seventh grader Luke G., and eighth grader Dakota G. who placed 14th in Experimental Design; sixth graders Pearly W. and Jordyn B. who placed 12th in Dynamic Planet and 15th in Road Scholar; and seventh graders Chloe W. and Elle S. who placed in the top half of the 40 schools in the toughest written exams, which subjects included microbiology, anatomy and physiology, Disease Detectives, Microbe Mission, and Potions and Poisons.

Sixth graders Daniel L. and Paul H. also contributed to the success of the Buckley team by participating in Write Stuff, while Paolo S. and Liam G. tried their hand at the Towers competition.

Sister-brother duo Dakota G. and Luke G. entered the Write It Do It competition, where one person writes a description of an object and the other person has to construct the object in a separate room using those instructions.

"That competition was really about teamwork, listening, and understanding your partner, so as siblings Dakota and Luke were a great fit for it," said Firestone.

Dakota and Luke were 4th place medal recipients in the Write It Do It competition, placed 8th in the Ecology competition, and placed 15th in Fast Facts.
