Campus Moonlight Theatre Gets Experimental

What’s now become a collaborative tradition among the performing arts, English, dance, and other departments, Campus Moonlight Theatre came out with yet another format this year – this time showcasing the new Center for Community and the Arts building along with an experimental theatre form.
Using what Theatre Department chair Neil Nash explained in his introduction as “physical theatre,” a form of performance that uses dance and movement, students performed Federico Garcia Lorca’s Blood Wedding in several locations around the CCA. Audience members started in the theatre but traveled out to courtyard and up the back stairs, where they peered down at the scenes on the ground. The final scene occurred back on the main stage.

“This particular model of theatre was founded by Meyerhold in Russia, Brecht in Germany, Decroux in France, Grotowski in Poland, and Barba in Denmark,” says Upper School Community Service Director and Middle School English teacher Abi Basch, who worked with Kinderdeutsch Projekts in Germany. “Abstraction can challenge and spark one’s own creative thinking and engagement. It can encourage us to see the world in new way. Bring your imaginations. Let the performance wash over you. The same is true for the student performers -- as they perform, they get caught up in the choreography and discover new impulses, emotions, and experiences.

Audience members were told to “follow the Moon,” played by senior Kelly M., who led them to the various scene locations. The other actors who participated were Caleb B., Ella B., Xochitl B., Ben F., Matthew J., Hal R., Olivia R., Imogen S., Josh S., and Mariel T.

Dance teacher Anne Moore choreographed the dance portions of the program, performed by Brooke B., Zoe C., Emily F., Alison G., Kelsey G., Sue L., Amy M., Benazira M., Satori R., Jane W., and Sabrina Y.

“This type of theatre is pretty ‘out there,’ so it took a while to get the students on board,” says Nash. “But they did!  It’s always good for students and actors to get out of their comfort zones and try something different and challenging.”
