Fourth Grade's On a Mission
Fourth grade students are on a mission to visit missions!
Each year in schools around California, fourth grade students study the rich history of the state's missions. Built by Catholic priests, missions dot the landscape all across California.
"The missions were all one day's walk away from each other," says fourth grade teacher Mrs. Levitt.
"So every two laps we walk represent walking from one mission to the next," chimes in fourth grader Eliza G.
Born from a desire to get kids moving and playing during recess, Mrs. Levitt came up with the idea for a "mission walk," and her students Eliza and Amelia T. helped make it a reality.
"We started researching the missions and found pictures of them," explains Amelia. "Then we put all the pictures and information into a packet, for anyone who wanted to participate."
Students who wish to can run or walk as many laps around the Lower School playground, and for every two laps they "visit" a mission. Mrs. Levitt meets them at the entrance to the playground where she stamps their packet as having visited that mission.
Students have until the second-to-last day of school to visit as many missions as possible. Those who complete the packet will win a lunch with Mrs. Parsons!
