Buckley Wins Big at LA Science Fair!

Upper School Applied Science students took several awards at the Los Angeles County Science and Engineering Fair this weekend, earning one first place award, one second, one third, an honorable mention, and several recognition and named awards, in the senior division. Buckley’s three top winners will go to the California State Science Fair next month in downtown L.A.!

“I am so proud of them and their passion,” says Dr. Aidyl Gonzalez, science department co-chair and developer of Buckley’s Applied Science program, in which students can apply for independent study on a personal project.

Junior Jessica B. took first place in the Behavioral/Social Science category for her project on “The Extent and Effect of School Burnout on Adolescents.” Senior Jordan S. won second place in Engineering Applications and earned a Darrell Smedley award for his invention of the stippling pen, or “Drawing Optimization Technology.” In third place in Ecology, junior Emma C. won for her study on the “Environmental Effect on Health and Behavior of Nematodes.”

Buckley’s presence was highlighted throughout the event by the Fair’s theme, Lab Coat Heroes, the winning submission by Buckley junior Panna G. Out of thousands of entries, Panna’s theme concept and logo design were picked by the Fair committee for its website, T-shirts, and other marketing materials. In addition, Panna’s project on nematodes in the Animal Biology division took a recognition award.

Junior Kaleabe A. earned an honorable mention for his project on “Seaweed Electrolyte” in Chemistry and junior Caroline B. won an Engineering recognition award for her project, “The Biomechanics of Stress to Zen.”

Other recognition awards went to senior Berkely M. for her “Disease Detection System” in the Engineering Applications Senior Division, to senior Daniel K. in Mathematics and Computer Sciences for his work on “Expediting the Process of Hereditary and Genetic Health Tracking,” and to junior Taylor S. for her project, “The Stress Button,” in Mathematics and Computer Science.

Congratulations to all the Applied Science students for their creativity, dedication, and hard work! The California State Competition will take place April 24-25 in the California Science Center in Exposition Park.
