Girls Volleyball: Killin' It

Head coach Juliane Piggott and the girls on Buckley's volleyball team are shaking up the program like never before.
October has been a busy month. On Thursday, October 6, the team girls hosted their third annual Dig Pink match to support weSpark, an organization dedicated to breast cancer awareness and research. Through donations and tees shirt sales (thanks to the Parents’ Association for their help!) the Buckley community raised more than $600 to benefit the organization. The girls went on to win three straight matches against YULA (25-10, 25-5, and 25-12).

Only two days later, on Saturday, October 8, the team traveled to a tournament in San Gabriel and placed fourth out of 32 teams. Out of all of their matches, they only lost one game to three-time tournament champions, Hemet.

"Buckley volleyball has never really gone to tournaments like this before, so it was great for the girls to be able to play teams outside of our normal competition," said head coach, Juliane Piggott.

Back in 2014, Buckley lost to Upland Christian in the quarter finals of CIF play. They met the team again in San Gabriel, this time, defeating them three matches to one to secure a first place ranking in CIF.

At the end of the tournament, junior Caroline B. was named to the All-Tournament team, a huge accomplishment in a field of over 200 players! She was also named MaxPreps player of the match against Hemet.

The last big event in October was the always bittersweet senior night. Three seniors were recognized: Amy M., captain Claire C., and Chloe F. The girls had a stellar game against AGBU, sweeping the team in three matches.

In their personal statements, all three seniors thanked coach Juliane Piggott, as well as their teammates.

"This team has been so supportive, and I am so proud of everyone's achievements... I can't believe this is my last year of playing with these incredible girls," said Amy.

The girls are currently 20-8 overall and 10-1 in League. Their next match is at Holy Martyrs Armenian tonight at 5:15 p.m. In their games against Pilibos, Archer School for Girls, and de Toledo, sophomore Celine F., junior Sophie A., and sophomore Sabrina Y. were named MaxPreps Player of the Match respectively.
