History is Made (Again): Boys Golf Makes State Tournament

This year, the boys varsity golf team became the second golf team in the school’s history to qualify for the state team tournament. With a record of 8-5, this is the ninth straight season with a winning record.
“This has been the best group of guys, I’m really proud of them. This is probably the deepest and lowest scoring team we’ve ever had,” said Coach Jon Klay.

Coach Klay, who is celebrating his twentieth year at Buckley, said that the team started the season with low scores and has kept that consistency all year.

“We have a really strong group of guys this year. We used some of our non-League games in the beginning to shake the team out and really figure out where our strengths were,” said Klay.

This is also the first team in history to have four players (seniors Mark R., and Andrew F.; sophomore Max B.; and freshman Akira F-H.)shoot under 40 in the same match. For anyone unfamiliar with golf, the lower the score, the better.

“It’s unlike any other sport that we play here. Although it’s an individual sport, we still play as a team. This year the guys have really taken that concept to heart.”

In a typical match, six students will play. The number one and two players from Buckley will match up with the number one and two players from the opposing school to make a team of four. The same thing happens with the number three and four players, and the five and six. Three teams will then start playing 18 holes of golf. As the players come back in, their scores are added up (the highest score gets dropped) and Buckley gets its final score.

“One of the great things about a K-12 school is that we can start exposing them to golf as early as third grade. Right now we have roughly 23 boys and 15 girls in the Middle School playing either on the team or in class, which is great for the future of golf at Buckley. We have a really healthy, thriving program here,” Klay explained
