During the Martin Luther King Jr. weekend, I attended the Southern California 52nd Gala celebration of Martin Luther King Jr., along with many of my friends in MLK Young Dreamers for Justice, a group I co-founded in the seventh grade. We pride ourselves on enacting change through bridging communities, service, and activism.
The night was focused on appreciating what we have and honing in on where we can enact change. Buckley kids showed up strong, with ninth grade students Lochlan M., Ruth J., Leelu L., and junior Vivienne H.-F. in attendance. We ate, conversed, and heard from an array of speakers, including Mayor Karen Bass, civil rights leader Reverend Lowrey, and author Tavis Smiley.
I was lucky enough to speak on behalf of the Young Dreamers (along with my cofounder, Jehoshua S.) about voting rights. I was extremely nervous to start, but once I began speaking I became more confident. By the end of my speech, I had collected claps from all around the room. Going back to my table, I was greeted with hugs and applause. It was a great experience!
We had a fantastic turnout and I was incredibly proud of the Young Dreamers for being a pillar of activism in the next generation.
