Ever Done a "Bio Blitz"?

Students in Middle School Gardening and AP Environmental Science got together for a BioBlitz on two successive days.
Starting at the front gate of Buckley's campus and moving south to the art studios, teams of three (two seventh graders and one Upper School student) looked for as many living species as they could find in an hour.

“We have such a unique opportunity here on Buckley’s campus in the Santa Monica Mountains to do this kind of research,” said Anat Fernandes, interim science department chair, who also leads the Green Buckley initiative and is advisor to the Climate Action Team.

Using the app iNaturalist, students take photos of everything from an acorn to a beetle to a lizard, and upload them. The photos are then crowd-sourced, and once the species is identified and confirmed by other app users, the photo is then marked “research grade” meaning it is able to be used by environmental scientists and biologists for their research.

Anyone can do a BioBlitz! Have a BioBlitz party and invite some friends over to your backyard!
