Want to Save the Planet? New Classes Teach You How!

Among the new classes offered this school year, students have the opportunity to take two environmental literacy electives: Tipping Points with Anat Fernandes and How to Save the Planet: An Interdisciplinary Approach to the Climate Crisis with Eric Peterson.

“There’s been a tremendous amount of interest both from students and faculty in the last couple of years to expand our programs around climate change and sustainability,” said Gregg Sacon, K-12 Director of Innovative Teaching and Learning.

In Fernandes’ class, students focus on scientific data to better understand environmental literacy, gain scientific literacy skills, and better understand their impact on local and global perspectives through projects and research.

In Peterson’s class, students will take a holistic look at environmental literacy, working to understand the systemic causes of this topic, impacts on different populations, exploring the topic of environmental justice and more.

“Ms. Fernandes is helping students to develop college-level research skills. Students are learning how to do article critiques, how to discern truth, and how to determine what’s scientifically relevant. There was lively, deep conversation about these issues [in the class],” Sacon said after a visit to Tipping Points.
