Celebrating Social Justice through Artistic Expression with Dr. Philip Woodmore

“The point is to do your best work, in the moment and from an authentic place in your hearts, and to deliver all of the emotional, physical and mental energy to make sure the music is elevated,” said Dr. Philip Woodmore to Upper School choral students.
Teaching students to connect with and break down the layers of music beyond simply liking a song. St. Louis native Dr. Woodmore brought his expertise as an educator and musician to Buckley for a two-day internal field trip focused on social justice, the power of music, and the importance of using your voice for change.

Sharing about his visit to Buckley and his interactions with Upper School students, Dr. Woodmore wrote on Instagram, “Today was one of most thoughtful and creative think-tank sessions I ever experienced in my entire career.”

“I asked the students to take all the impactful items from today’s discussion on social justice and create the different elements/tools we need to compose a song – we worked on lyrics both in English and in Spanish, some groups worked on cover art, others created main themes and ideas—one group even created and performed a rap,” continued Dr. Woodmore.

The exercises and connections between social justice and music continued into day two for a conversation in Choral Director John Touchton’s class, a social justice discussion with Middle School students, a workshop for students to discuss projects during lunch, and a visit to Brian Merry’s history class.
