Portrait Raffle Q&A with Lower School Art Teacher Rama Hughes

Every month, Lower School art teacher Rama Hughes shares a presentation with Lower School families that highlights an artist of the month.
January’s raffle highlighted Zaha Hadid, a British-Iraqi Architect known for her deconstructivist design. We sat down with Hughes for a Q&A about the portrait raffle. Continue reading to hear from Hughes.

What is the goal of the raffle?
One of the main things I want the students here to know is that we’re working artists. If we’re aren’t making time to make art, how can we expect them to make time to make art? I want to set an example for students and show that even though we’re busy and have jobs, we can still make time for our own art. It’s a fun way to celebrate the kids.

How do you choose the artist to feature in the monthly slideshow?
We really want to try to make sure what we teach reflects the full scope of art history. When I started, I had a few in mind for the first few months. Now, Christine Terry and I talk as the month is coming up. We try to pick someone who either syncs up with as many of the projects as possible or I try to time the projects to sync up with the artist. She was the one who suggested Banksy – the one that all the kids really loved. Ultimately, we try to have something in there, that besides being about great artists and relating to what we’re studying, also has something that would welcome a conversation about DEI.

How long does it take to make the portraits?
[Students] send in their answers, and if they got all of the answers correct, I put their name in a jar. On the first of every month, Christine Terry reaches into the jar in front of the class and picks the name of the month. When the student comes to class, we take their photo and I let them know their portrait will be ready by the end of the month.
