Honoring the Life of Sidney Poitier, a Parent to Two Buckley Alumni
Sidney Poitier: a Hollywood trailblazer, actor, parent to two Buckley alumni, and dedicated member of Buckley’s Board of Trustees from 1988 to 1994 passed away on January 7, 2022.
In a 2019 interview with Buckley alum Elaine Sir ‘91, Portier shared what it means to be a parent and a parent’s influence to shape a child into a successful adult. His life story is one of inspiration, overcoming challenges as the leading Black actor in 1960s Hollywood, and offering guidance to his children.
“He was always just a dad. The dad who couldn’t go to bed at a reasonable hour since he was on duty to pick us up… He’s the dad with the longest legs in the parent/child 3-legged race at Buckley’s Junior Olympics,” wrote Sir ‘91.
