Head of School Alona Scott Unveils Educational Vision: Portrait of a Graduate

During the recent Parents’ Association (PA) State of the School meeting, Head of School Alona Scott unveiled Buckley’s Portrait of a Graduate.
The portrait is a shared vision of the qualities and skills Buckley desires to instill in its students to prepare them for college and for life.

“This helps keep students at the center of all of our decision making. It puts them in the forefront of our mind and heart as we think about the large decisions and day-to-day decisions,” said Alona Scott, head of school.

The process for the portrait started one year ago. In an opening session, faculty members were encouraged to provide their input on what they believe students need to know to be prepared for the future. Buckley conducted a single-question parent survey. A design team of faculty, trustees, and administrators to continue the conversation.

“We paid attention to the work and thinking of organizations so we make sure we are not in our own world,” said Ms. Scott.

After months of surveys and collaborations, the five key attributes Buckley found students need to be prepared for college and for life include: true friend, creative thinker, resilient explorer, inclusive leader, and dynamic storyteller.

“We really believe these demonstrated behaviors are the critical ones," Ms. Scott shared.

"This helps teachers get more specific as they think about and plan for their classes. These are the ones that are necessary and timeless, much like the four-fold plan we have.”
