Martin Luther King, Jr. Service Day

While we may not be able to physically gather this Martin Luther King, Jr. Day to celebrate Dr. King’s legacy, the Buckley Service Program was able to organize a no-contact, COVID-cautious volunteer opportunity to give back to the community in the spirit of service and racial justice.
Buckley is partnering with local non-profit The Valley of Change, which organizes daily Black Lives Matter peaceful protests at the Sherman Oaks Galleria and also community service projects to help neighbors in need during the pandemic. On MLK Day, The Valley of Change will distribute 400 meals to the unhoused and other neighbors in need.

Buckley Families: If you are interested in preparing one or more dishes for distribution, you can (1) sign up online for the food you wish to prepare or supplies you wish to provide here and then (2) drop off the dish and/or supplies (contact-free) at the Sherman Oaks Galleria fountain (Ventura & Sepulveda) at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 18. Please see this flyer for more information.

Please be aware that while all volunteers participating in this event from Buckley and The Valley of Change strive to follow recommended CDC protocols to keep participants safe, Los Angeles is in a heightened phase of the spread of COVID-19. Participation in this event is at your own discretion and risk. For further information, please read these facts on the current spread of COVID-19 in Los Angeles County.

As Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said in one of his final speeches, “everybody can be great, because everybody can serve… You only need a heart full of grace, a soul generated by love.” Even as we are physically separated, we are fortunate to have the opportunity to come together as a community in grace and love to honor the legacy of Dr. King.
