'Fireside' Ignites Passion for Poetry

Middle School's second annual Fireside Poetry event yesterday attracted more than double the audience and poets of last year and showcased the work of several new voices.
"I am so proud of all the young writers who read their poetry," says Irie DeLilly, English teacher and the event's faculty advisor. "It takes a lot of courage to be vulnerable and share your personal work with others, and the Middle School showed up and delivered. Teaching them in the classroom is one thing, but watching the students come alive onstage really grounds me in the work that I do.”

Students read one poem each and were joined at the end by ninth grade student Chloe W., who read her own poetry and offered words of encouragement to her younger counterparts. "Don't worry about what anyone will think," she said. "Just write for yourself."

Eighth grader Merlot G. helped organize the event and read her own poem. She was joined by fellow eighth grade students Josette E., Quinn G., Paulina J., Caitlin K., Daisy M., Hannah M., Ella R., Myla S., Sienna S., Robyn V., and Sophia W. Seventh grade students Maya B., Elan H., Maia M., and Bennett M. also read poems.
