Author Roda Ahmed Visits Buckley

Have you ever heard of Mae Jemison?
When author Roda Ahmed asked this question to our Lower School students during her visit to Buckley, very few students raised their hands to show they’d heard of the astronaut. Roda  told students that until recently, she too had never heard of Mae Jemison, who became the first African American woman to travel in space in 1992.

When Roda was looking for books to read to her daughter, she started doing research about stories with female heroes as protagonists. She was surprised to find Mae Jemison’s story, as she had no idea an African American woman had traveled to space. After looking for stories about Mae and finding none had been written, she decided to make one herself, in the hopes of adding Mae Jemison’s name to the list of other great astronauts our students learn about, like Sally Ride, Neil Armstrong, and Buzz Aldrin. Roda then proceeded to write, “Mae Among the Stars.”

Roda read her book during the Lower School’s #BHM2019 Assembly, sponsored by the Office of Equity and Inclusion. Thank you for stopping by, Roda, and for sharing Mae’s incredible story with our students!
