Buckley Honors Lunar New Year

Various student groups across campus honored Lunar New Year, which commenced on Tuesday, February 5.
In the Lower School, kindergarten through fifth grade students in Culture Club gathered to celebrate Lunar New Year. Students learned about the holiday and how it is celebrated around the world. Parent Sabrina Lee visited and spoke about how her family celebrates the holiday. Students learned about red envelopes and the importance of receiving money for good luck, as well as the symbolism of noodles, a sign of longevity. At the end of the presentation, students were able to interact with a traditional Lunar New Year display and also taste authentic Chinese food and sweets.

Middle School students in Mr. Holliday’s and Miss Zhang’s Chinese classes learned about the history and traditions of the holiday. They also set up a display in the Robert Young Library.

In the Upper School, students in Chinese Club, the Asian American Affinity Group (AASA), and Diversity Club collaborated and created an opportunity for their peers to share why the holiday is significant and how they celebrate with their families. Various students were able to share their stories; Sue L. and Joe Z, talked about their experiences celebrating Lunar New Year in China as well as in the United States. Robert W. spoke about the importance of spending time with his grandparents and other elders during the holiday.
