Congratulations, Annika!

Upper School student Annika R. is now a patent-pending inventor!
Annika currently has patent-pending applications for two products: a rubber band/bracelet and stick-on nails. Both pieces of wearable technology contain a chip that sends out the location of the user to their emergency contact once activated in the case of an emergency. Because it is relatively inconspicuous and reliant on GPS technology, these devices are more reliable and discrete than just a cell phone. Additionally, both products are bio-degradable, eco-friendly, and affordable for the average consumer.

“I had the idea for my invention in middle school after I stumbled upon an article about Ariel Castro, a man who had kidnapped three girls and kept them captive in his basement for over a decade,” said Annika. “This story frightened me to my core and really made me feel helpless. I knew I wanted to do something to help protect girls and women so that we would never have to feel unsafe out and about. I went to Dr. G with my idea and she encouraged me to take Applied Science. Throughout the year, I have worked on refining, designing, and building my product. With the help of Dr. G and Peter Marx, the former CFO of Los Angeles, I made a working prototype using a Raspberry Pi and GPS technology.”

A few weeks ago, Annika filed a provisional patent for her technology, which was a very exciting moment. Her next step will be going through a cost reduction and size-minimization process with the current prototype. She will also be presenting at the Los Angeles Science Fair over Spring Break in March.

Great work, Annika!
