Upper School Students Participate in Day of Service
On Monday, January 28, 2019, all Upper School classes were suspended as students engaged in a day of service.
The Day of Service exemplifies Buckley’s mission to help students “find joy and meaning in life and make an impact in the world.” Each project connects to one or more of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
Ninth grade students traveled to Downtown LA as part of their Intersections of Identity class to volunteer at Union Rescue Mission and the Midnight Mission. Tenth grade students partnered with students from the Help Group, a local school for children with special needs. Students came to Buckley’s campus to engage in a field day of sports and arts activities, supported by Special Olympics. Eleventh grade students worked with the organization TreePeople to build a community garden of native plants at the head of the nature trail on Buckley's campus.
Finally, twelfth grade students traveled to different parts of the San Fernando Valley to serve at organizations that aid our neighbors experiencing hunger and homelessness. One group served meals at Hope of the Valley, another packed boxes at Valley Food Bank (where our Spirit Week Food Drive goes!), and the third helped at Hope Gardens recovery center for women that have been the victims of domestic violence.
