On Thursday, November 1, Mitch Kohn’s American Literature class and Tim Lokiec’s AP Art class journeyed to Los Angeles’ Arts District for a 2-hour walking tour of the area’s street art and murals.
The mural and graffiti scene in Los Angeles has been undergoing a renaissance the past few years, fueled by an absolutely amazing cadre of local artists joined by some of the best from around the globe. Led by a local artist, Hector Calderon aka Shandu One, the two-hour walk tied into the curriculum of both American Literature and AP Art. In American Literature, Mr. Kohn’s students take their own journeys into the city to write personal narratives. Over the course of the year, his students read essays by Joan Didion, David Foster Wallace, John McPhee, and others centering on writing about personal experience and place. Meanwhile, Mr. Lokiec’s class explores personal self expression through art.
The students enjoyed viewing pieces that varied in technique, style, and medium while listening to the rich history of street art in LA.
