Former NASA astronaut, Columbia professor of mechanical engineering, and the senior advisor for space programs at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum Mike Massimino visited an Astronomy Club meeting via Zoom last week during lunch, on April 26.
He spoke about realizing his childhood dream to become an astronaut and what that entails, along with the rigors of training for space. “I loved his advice to never give up,” says Casey N., “He was rejected three different times, but he did not give up and look where he is now. It's important not to get in your head about a mistake and to prevent yourself from getting upset.”
Massimino is the veteran of two space flights to the Hubble Telescope and has a team record for the number of hours spacewalking in a single shuttle mission. He was also the first person to tweet from space. For his full bio, click here.
According to Casey, the Astronomy Club meets regularly to discuss topics such as the findings of the James Webb Space Telescope, the largest optical telescope in space, or any big news about black holes or stargazing events. Seventh grade science teacher Brian Rector is the club’s advisor.
The visit came compliments of sophomores Asher P. Casey facilitated the visit along with Liam P. and Philippe S.

Just when it felt as though we were just getting started, we finished the final main stage production of the year, the dance concert. This year’s theme was Fem and Ism. All Upper School dance classes and the advanced Middle School dance class participated. Most of the dances in the concert were choreographed by students within these classes.
