Middle School Participates in Full Day DEI Symposia

To deliver this year’s Middle School symposia, students presented and participated in a full day symposium of pre-recorded content covering topics such as representation in STEM, the AAPI experience, and women in the workplace:
  • Uplifting Ability – A Keynote with Buckley parent Jen Manley: Manley shared a conversation with our community about differences and how to uplift various abilities. This keynote addressed how we can be respectfully curious and empower people in the world who have different abilities. In sharing a personal story, Manley emphasized the importance of words, stating, “words can hurt or empower, identify or pigeon-hole people.”
  • Representation Matters: Overcoming Obstacles in STEM: This presentation gave students and faculty a glimpse into the lives and achievements of STEM innovators who fought hard to overcome obstacles in the field in order to pave a way for others. This symposium dives into the oracle, gender, age, ability, and sexual orientation gaps in the STEM field.
  • AAPI Experience: To uplift AAPI identities on campus, student presenters explored the impact of Japanese internment camps, examined Korean and Filipino culture, and highlighted aspects of Asian pop culture through images and videos. To bring in a personal touch, students shaped their experiences to spark conversations within advisory groups.
  • Women in Workplace: Through an interactive symposium on the imbalances of women’s rights in the workplace, students incorporated videos, music, and discussions to teach about the gender pay gap, women holding executive positions, and the dress code differences between men and women. This session also highlighted the empowering women on campus including: Head of School Alona Scott, Assistant Head of School Lolli Lucas, Head of Upper School Gillian Bush, and Middle School Dean Terra Holman.
Thank you to all of our presenters for their efforts in the Spring DEI Symposium:
