SSALA: Raising Kids Amidst ‘Call Out’ Culture: A Conversation with Loretta Ross
We all want our kids to stand up for what’s right, but what does healthy, effective standing up look like in an era of social media and political tribalization? Calling others out may seem like an act of righteousness, yet the practice can give rise to a climate of fear, mistrust, and cruelty – and ultimately undermine the values of acceptance and empathy it was often intended to uphold. In a conversation with professor and activist Loretta J. Ross, we will discuss the dangers of 'call out' culture and explore more productive approaches to standing up for what’s right. An equality activist for 50 years and a professor at Smith College, Ross' most recent work highlights the perils of calling others out and posits healthier, more effective approaches to standing up for what's right. Her work was recently featured in The New York Times and she has a new book on the topic, Calling In the Calling Out Culture, due out this year.
This will be a moderated conversation with Loretta Ross followed by an audience Q&A.
