Swim Team Wins League and Makes CIF Finals

By Gwen John, Buckley parent
Friday the 13th may be unlucky for some, but for the Buckley swim team it was anything but.  Sixteen swimmers competed in the CIF Southern Section Preliminaries and Finals in a quest that saw the team beat four school records.
Held over two days in Riverside, six Buckley relay teams made it to CIF, including in the boys & girls 200 yard medley relay, boys & girls 200 yard freestyle relay and the boys & girls 400 yard freestyle relay.  As well, seniors Michael J. and Eric H., juniors Brandon J., Allegra C. and Peter W.; sophomores Lachie W. and Rubani W., and freshmen Nathaniel F. and Arleigh H. made it for individual events.

League champions two years in a row
The week before, at UCLA, Buckley took home the Liberty League Championship—their second win in a row. They blitzed the opposition and broke a number of Liberty league records.

With 34 members, the swim team is the biggest athletics team on campus. “We’ve always had good numbers to swim,” said Coach Keri Hehn, who has been coaching the team for the past five years. “This year, however, we’ve had a record number of freshmen who have joined. We have an upwards trajectory in terms of squad size and I hope it continues.”

Buckley alum and last year’s swim captain, Vincent Seidler, was at this year’s CIF to cheer the team on. “It’s like a tradition for the alumni to come down and support the team.  Austin (Wilson), Jess (Walia) and Daniel (Primachenko) have all come in previous years, so this year it was our turn (Alex Hernandez also came for both the Prelims and Finals to cheer on the team).

“The swim team is one big family and that is all thanks to Coach Hehn, she’s the best and the fact that she has swum in four Olympics trials doesn’t get much better than that—it gives us her experience which she is happy to pass down, which helps us when competing.

Sophomore Lachie W. said, “I love being part of the swim team because we have each other’s backs.  The Seniors provide the mentoring and support us younger team members need and it inspires us to swim our best for ourselves, the team and for Buckley.”
