Senior Creates Lit Laugh Love Salon

When senior Koroush B. told his English teacher that he was interested in reading some of his poetry aloud, Mr. Kohn said he happened to know of a literary salon, Wilde Words (named for Oscar Wilde), run by a former student from his old school, Vesta Vaingloria.
They went to the next meeting, and it was at that reading Koroush became determined to bring something similar to students at Buckley.

“The experience of sharing his work with others—and getting such support and congratulations—made him want his peers at Buckley to have that experience, as well,” says Mr. Kohn.

Enlisting the help of fellow lit lovers Sabine O., Izzy B., Isabelle F., and Vivi R., he snapped into action to make it a reality, and on April 14 a group of parents, guardians and Upper School students gathered in the Choir Room to hear a diverse sampling of short stories and poetry.

The subjects of the short stories ranged from a post-break up meditation to a hilarious tale about a third grade presidential election (featuring a candidate eerily similar to Donald Trump)Event participants included Berkley M., Sabine O, Iyanna L., Armen G., Abigain N., Sasha E., Imogen S., Margot H., Maria L., Kourosh B., and Ms. Vaingloria.

Mr. Kohn believes in the power bringing literature onto the stage.” The act of reading your work out loud and getting an immediate and visceral reaction from an audience is an amazing rush,” he says “And it drives writers to produce even more work!”
