Chinese New Year Tradition Takes Charitable Turn

Every year since kindergarten, eighth grade student Jane W. has celebrated the Chinese New Year by hosting a lunch for her entire grade.
“I started the tradition when Jane was in kindergarten, because I wanted her to feel connected to her heritage,” says Jane’s mother Susan. “This year, she and Brooke came up with the idea to raise money for their service project.”

Half the Sky is a non-profit charity that trains caregivers in orphanages across China, in an effort “to bring a caring adult into the lives of every orphan in China.” The organization was founded in 1998 based on research that forming an emotional bond with an adult is essential to healthy development.

Because 95 percent of healthy abandoned children are female, it is named after the Chinese adage, “Women hold up half the sky.”

Jane and Brooke were both adopted from Chinese orphanages, and chose Half the Sky for this year’s service project. And they are able to celebrate the new year with their friends, eating chow mein and cracking open fortune cookies!
