New Writing Fellows Open for Business

Because of the overwhelming demand for writing fellows to tutor during lunch, director of the program Dr. Liz Phillips has trained nine new fellows, who will be available to walk-ins during lunch, Monday-Friday, in Room 119.
“Fellows are trained to help with any kind of writing – essays, job applications, cover letters,” says Phillips. “They can help with big picture considerations and high level writing support. But they’re not copyeditors.”

With the help of current fellows, juniors Adam T. and Ana K., Philips trained the new students during two consecutive lunches. The training includes role play and acting out how a tutor would respond to theoretical situations, such as a shy or reluctant student, and what to focus on in any given paper. Tutees are also asked to fill out a form when they walk in to the Writing Lab, asking what they want to work on and hope to gain from the experience.

“It’s important for students to take ownership of the experience and not feel disempowered,” says Phillips.

Students wishing to be fellows must have a B in AP English, or a B+ in regular. Dr. Phillips will start accepting a new round of applications in April from rising juniors and seniors for next year’s fellows.
