Six Attend Young Women's Conference

Six seniors attended the Young Women’s Conference at Brentwood School on Saturday, January 30. Almost a thousand girls from across the Los Angeles area attended the conference, which began three years ago with the mission empower young women to take charge of the future in positive ways that influence and inspire others.
Makena G., Jillian H., Ugo O., Dylan R.-H., Jalyn T. and Rose Z. attended the conference for girls in grades seven through 12. Breakout sessions addressed themes of advocacy, entrepreneurship, professional paths, self-expression, identity and body image, social media empowerment, relationships, and transforming stereotypes.

Key note speaker Diane Von Furstenberg  advised, “the most important relationship is the relationship you have with yourself.” She accompanied her presentation with visuals of her iconic and ground-breaking wrap dress, which debuted in 1972 and has been credited with being emblematic of women’s liberation for its ease and comfort.
Von Furstenberg also added that women often want to be asked to get involved, or to contribute, but that “fear is not an option. Once you have your voice, you can use it for people who don’t have a voice.”

Other presenters included Olympic gold medalist in track and field Allyson Felix, former White House correspondent Jessica Yellin, and Jess Weiner, who has written and spoken about the body culture of women for decades and recently consulted on the new release of Barbie’s diverse line of dolls.

“I told everyone [who attended]: You can come back feeling inspired, but use that feeling to take younger girls under your wing,” said Diversity Multiculturalism and Inclusion Director Ralinda Watts. “It’s your responsibility to take this and empower someone else.”
