What Is It Wednesday?

Every Wednesday, we will be posting a detail of a photograph from somewhere around campus on our Instagram account (the_buckley_school). Visit our homepage news story to see the bigger picture!
This week’s detail shot is of a god’s eye, several of which are currently on display in the World Languages hallway. Made from sticks and colorful yarn, the crafty concoctions are prevalent in many cultures as a symbolic deterrent for evil spirits.

Noemi Salazar’s Spanish III students read the Mexican legends El Ojo de Dios, and then set to work making their own god’s eyes.  The story on the eye of god is about a blind native girl who is able to see after her mother makes an eye of god with two branches and colorful yarn.

“It’s a great thing to do if we have a few minutes left at the end of the class,” says Salazar. “It’s very calming and the kids love it. And some of them are learning how to make knots!”

Visit Salazar’s classroom to see more of the students’ handiwork.  And see you next Wednesday on Instagram for a “What Is It?” photo!
