Boys Varsity Basketball Volunteers As Part of Training

This past Saturday, boys basketball coach Mike Hamilton brought his varsity team to Hope of the Valley Rescue Mission in Van Nuys, as part of his seasonal training and team-building.
“I first went with the eighth grade on one of their service days and thought it was so important, since we have so much here,” says Coach Hamilton of what inspired this tradition five years ago. “We don’t just drop off donations, we spend the whole day working in the kitchen, serving food. It’s a very emotional experience.”

After picking up groceries, the boys headed to the organization’s homeless services hub and started cooking hot dogs and making sandwiches. The team served roughly 80 meals and gave each patron a sack lunch to take with him or her.

Hope of the Valley Rescue Mission has several locations throughout the Valley that serve the homeless.  Its vision is to offer “Hope, Hot Meals, Housing, Health Services and Healing to those in need.”

That night, the team played against the tough Price High School, and felt the difference in how they worked together on the court.

“We played with our hearts that night, and gave 110 percent to the game,” says senior Nish M. “As an team, I felt like we became much closer by helping out and working together.”
