Upper School Students Awarded for "Gracious Professionalism"

Buckley’s Griffitrons, the Upper School robotics team led by physics teacher Jocelyn Plant and science department co-chair Aidyl Gonzalez-Serrichio, won the Team Spirit award at the FIRST Robotics Competition at Valencia High School this Sunday, September 27.
“I believe we won because our team just helped out as much as we could,” says senior Thelma C., a member of the Griffitrons who handles media relations.

The Griffitrons were recognized for “Gracious Professionalism,” a phrase coined and trademarked by FIRST as one of the organization’s most valued character traits. Defined as “a way of doing things that encourages high-quality work, emphasizes the value of others, and respects individuals and the community,” the team won the award during a scrimmage match called Recycle Rush, which involves stacking cubes and other recycled materials for points.

Founded in 1989, FIRST stands for For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. It’s competition program requires students to not only build a robot that performs certain tasks, but to create a team brand and fundraise.  The Griffitrons have a building team and a business team that collaborate.

A team photo and the award now live in the display case on the first floor of the Mathematics and Science Building. Stop by to check them out!
