The doors to the new Robert Young Library opened Monday to an influx of Middle and Upper School students, who seemed to intuitively put the space to use as the social study hall it was designed to be.

“Students have immediately taken to the study rooms, which is great,” says Matt Wittmer, head Middle and Upper School librarian. “They’ve even started writing on the walls.”

Typically, a librarian might not love students taking markers to the place, but the white board walls in the study rooms are made just for that. The four separate sound-proof rooms are separated by glass and allow for much greater versatility for students who need a quiet reading space or places for more animated discussion.
Wittmer and assistant librarian Serena Vaquilar can also flip the rooms’ usage through the day, designating the greater library quiet while sending chattier groups to the rooms—and vice versa.

Natural light floods the open space filled with couches, long tables, and plenty of opportunities to plug in. While print book inventory was significantly reduced, “We’ve already had some check-outs,” says Wittmer. “And a few specific book requests.”
And of course the most popular library resources remain favorites: laptops and printer. The new space boasts 25 bolted-down laptops and two laptop carts with 10 computers each. “They can sit in a comfortable seat and work on their stuff.”
“And chess is a huge thing,” says Wittmer. “It started last year when I ordered a couple portable seven-dollar chess boards. Now I’m constantly asked for them.”
