On Saturday, the Buckley boys varsity basketball team defeated Mission Prep of San Luis Obispo 54-46 to become the CIF Southern Section Div. V-AA Champions for the first time in school history. The team was seeded fourth in the CIF Southern Section playoffs. They knocked off the top seeded and defending state champs Village Christian in the semi-final round.

Their win qualified the team for the state tournament, and earned them a second seed in its Southern Division. Their first round game happens Wednesday, March 6, when the Griffins play Calvin Christian from Escondido.

“I’m so excited for our community,” said Head Boys Varsity Basketball Coach Mike Hamilton. “They are the reason we won CIF. Everyone has been so supportive and kind. We have been feeding off of their energy for several games now. Our fans, faculty and staff are continuing to carry us across the finish line. In terms of the team, these guys worked so hard to be here. Everything they did in the preseason prepared them for this time. I’m just happy to be along for the ride. This sort of success could not happen to a better group of young men.”

Details on time and location of Wednesday evening game will be announced later today.
