Matthew Wittmer, head Middle & Upper School librarian is one crazy librarian that is thrilled to be a part of the Buckley community. He loves helping others navigate information to explore their curiosities fully. He has loved to create things since kindergarten, which explains why his bachelors and masters degrees are in Fine Art. Creating and learning always bring him to exploring collections to find new information. These ongoing discoveries inspired him to acquire a masters degree in Library and Information Science at UCLA. Wittmer hasn’t only worked in libraries though - he has flipped burgers at McDonald’s, managed patients as a floor counselor in a locked psychiatric ward, taught advanced drawing at the University of Nebraska, and occasionally can be seen performing higher and higher tightrope walks. Wittmer became the assistant librarian for the Middle and Upper School Library in 2008 and has been the head librarian since 2009. He loves questions and encourages you to ask away!

Serena Vaquilar, assistant Middle & Upper School librarian has a background in music and library science. She studied at CSU Northridge with Oscar Meza of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and completed a bachelor's and a master's degree in music performance before leaving California to study library science at Wayne State University in Detroit. While studying at CSUN, Vaquilar regularly played in youth orchestras including the American Youth Symphony and the Young Musicians' Foundation's Debut Orchestra. Her experiences in Detroit included interning with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the Detroit Institute of Arts. Vaquilar completed her library studies with a summer internship at the Interlochen Arts Camp, where she was part of seven-person team of ensemble librarians. Prior to joining the team at Buckley, Vaquilar was a solo librarian at Kaplan College, where she was responsible for a multitude of tasks. There she oversaw all aspects of the daily library functions as well as planned and executed graduation, and created a system in Excel for book distribution that was scheduled to migrate into Access to be a fully functional point-of-sale database. She has a wide range of interests, including learning about the giant squid, is a fan of animals (especially dogs and pigs), is a stickler for grammar, and will freely talk about her cat to anyone who will listen.
